Internet via Satellite FAQ's

What are the advantages of One-Way vs. Two-Way Satellite?

A One-Way satellite system is much more flexible as it uses open standard satellite and Internet technologies. Two-Way Satellite systems were adapted from proprietory government, military and commercial applications and are far less reliable for everyday use.

Severe weather conditions can affect any satellite-based system. In fact, the end-user of a Two-Way system can experience a complete loss of connection. A One-Way Satellite system uses both the satellite link and a redundant terrestrial telephone link to the Internet. This means that if the end-user satellite connection is terminated, they may immediately reconnect via dial-up.

Our One-Way satellite system is far less expensive (about one third to one forth the cost) than a Two-Way system.

Upload times on a One-Way satellite system are three to six times faster than on a Two-Way satellite system.

Since Two-Way satellite systems are not standards based, FTP and POP e-mail is very unreliable.

How can I test my Actual Download Speed?

  1. Go to http://download.isatplatform.com and click on the largest file for download.
  2. The computer will ask if you want to open or save the file. Select save and it will ask you where to save it to. Anywhere is fine, it doesn't matter because you are going to cancel the download once you have your rate number.
  3. When the file begins to download, wait until the number by "Transfer Rate" stabilizes. This number is in "KB" or "Kilobytes". To get your transfer rate in "Kbps" or "Kilobits per Second", mulitiply the "KB" number by eight(8). There are eight bits per byte.
  4. There are web sites that claim to test bandwidth, but the results depend on how busy their servers are and can provide unstable or misleading results.

Is One-Way satellite more or less secure than Cable or DSL?

DSL and Cable connections are ALWAYS on. If you leave your computer on, even when you are asleep or at work, it is a potential target for hackers. One-Way satellite is secure in that when you log off (close the telephone connection) the only way for information to leave your computer is disconnected.

How long does it take to install from the time I order the service?

PC Source, Inc. is dedicated to resonding to your orders as quickly as possible. Installation included install of the PCI card to connect to the satellite dish and the dish mounting/alignment, therefore someone must be at your home for the install. Due to this fact, PC Source, Inc. believes that installs by appointment are the best plan. This could result in install times of a few days to two weeks from the order date depending on your schedule and ours. Standard installs will take about 2-3 hours at your home or business.
